Multivalent Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
ServicesThe Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a specialized department of IASO Thessalias where life support services are provided to those who need them on a 24-hour basis.
It has 11 beds, 4 of which support Thoracic surgery cases. It also has 2 isolation beds (BOX) and offers continuous and uninterrupted monitoring and care. It has a modern design, while each nursing position of the ICU has a specialized bed with an air mattress, its own ventilator and a monitoring system for the patient.
It is a multivalent ICU, equipped with modern machines, such as:
- Bedside monitors and a central station for continuous monitoring and recording of patients' vital functions, pulse oximetry, temperature, arterial pressure, central venous pressure, intracranial pressure, cerebral oximetry, pulmonary arterial pressure and cardiac output.
- Ventilators, intravenous infusion pumps, enteral feeding pumps, blood gas analyzers, activated clotting time (ACT) measurement device, intra-aortic sac, external pacemakers and automatic intermittent pneumatic compression devices.
- PRISMA machine (continuous venous hemodiafiltration) for the immediate treatment of hospitalized patients with acute or chronic renal failure.
The ICU of IASO Thessalias applies all the latest international protocols for managing critically ill patients, as they are developed and published in International Conventions and International Literature.
It addresses cases of all medical specialties, such as Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Neurology, Surgery, as well as Obstetrics – Gynecology.
The ICU is staffed with highly trained and specialized medical and nursing staff. It was created to treat critically ill patients effectively, but also to support demanding surgeries on a 24-hour basis. Both the medical and nursing staff actively participate in Panhellenic and global conferences, with several distinctions and with international and Greek publications.
All necessary techniques to support the vital functions of hospitalized patients may be applied 24/7. These include:
- Tracheal intubation
- Invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation
- Artery, central venous and pulmonary artery catheterization
- Placement and management of temporary cardiac pacemaker
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Pleural effusion drainage
- Therapeutic and diagnostic bronchoscopy
- Cricothyrotomy
- Percutaneous tracheostomy
- Intra-aortic sac placement
- Continuous renal replacement therapy
- Electrocardiogram and continuous vital sign monitoring
- Continuous recording and monitoring of hemodynamic parameters
- Transthoracic echocardiogram, as well as chest, abdominal, vascular and transcranial ultrasound
- Measurement of lactate, electrolytes, glucose, hemoglobin and hematocrit, and blood gas analysis
Various systems are used to assess the critical condition of patients, such as APACHE, and CASUS SCORE, so as to predict mortality and morbidity, admission criteria and quality of healthcare provision. It also applies all the ISO & TEMOS quality protocols.
All the ICU staff continuously strive to address the needs of patients and those around them as best as possible, as we understand how hard it is for people to have loved ones in hospital, and especially in an ICU.
