Internal Medicine ClinicsMedical smoking cessation programs worldwide are the most effective way to quit smoking, with success rates that approach 80%.
The treatment is performed by a pulmonology specialist, and combines medical observation, counseling and administration of special pharmaceutical treatment, if deemed necessary.
The program usually lasts three months and includes four consultations at the Clinic.
On the first visit, an evaluation and recording of the smoking habit and its nicotine addiction are performed by completing a special questionnaire, having the doctor perform a physical exam and undergoing the following tests:
- Spirometry
- Chest X-ray
- Carbon monoxide (CO) reading
- Oximetry
At the same time, advice is given to modify the smoker’s wrong habits and behaviors, and the appropriate pharmaceutical treatment is prescribed, if deemed necessary.
On the second and third visit, a pulmonary examination is performed, the progress of the patient's condition is assessed and adjustments are made to the pharmaceutical treatment, if deemed necessary.
On the last visit, another clinical lab test is performed and suitable instructions are given for treatment interruption or continuation.
