IASO General Clinic - IASO Children’s Hospital: Pioneering technique performed with utter success in the surgical treatment of nephrolithiasis in an 18-month-old boy
An innovative operation for the treatment of severe nephrolithiasis in an 18-month-old boy was carried out with utter success at IASO Children’s Hospital.
In particular, the 18-month-old child suffered from congenital rectal atresia, esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula and was subjected to consecutive surgeries from the day he was born for his restoration.
His difficult condition was further complicated by severe nephrolithiasis. The renal calculus that blocked one kidney led to infection and could lead to sepsis.
For the first time in Europe, the ultra-thin 6.3 Fr HugeMed ureteroscope was used in a patient of such a young age.
The pioneering work of IASO General Clinic and IASO Children’s Hospital did not stop there, as for the first time in Greece, the Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery method (Ultra-Mini ECIRS) by using the Ultra-Mini PCNL 13/11 Fr system, in such a small patient.
The 4th Urology Clinic of IASO General Clinic, having Mr. Nikolaos Bafaloukas, Urological Surgeon as Director, carries on the tradition of innovative techniques in the treatment of nephrolithiasis in patients of all ages and categories.
Thanks to these pioneering techniques, the simultaneous treatment of lithiasis in both kidneys was achieved with only one hospitalization day, as the boy was discharged the very next day, and in just one week he was free of all foreign bodies without having to undergo anesthesia once again. Now, our young friend is well, free from the problem that afflicted him so much.
