Hysteroscopic Surgery
Gynecology ClinicHysteroscopy is a procedure that examines the interior of the uterus (endometrium), using a special instrument - the hysteroscope. The hysteroscope is a type of telescope with a diameter ranging from 2.8 to 10 mm, which is connected to a monitor and it captures images which are depicted on a screen.
A hysteroscopy may be performed for diagnostic (Diagnostic hysteroscopy) or therapeutic purposes (Operative hysteroscopy).
For many physicians, hysteroscopy is an integral part of the investigation of infertility, especially when there are indications of endometrial pathology.
Frequent hysteroscopic surgeries include:
- Diagnostic hysteroscopy
- Removal of polyps
- Removal of fibroids
- Treatment of congenital uterine deformities (septum resection)
- Lysis of adhesions
- Infertility assessment
Most hysteroscopic surgeries last from a few minutes to an hour at most. In most cases, patients return home within a few hours after surgery, as no incisions or sutures are required. It is usually perform under mild sedation via general anesthesia and saline is used to better visualize the endometrial cavity. If deemed necessary, a biopsy may be performed for a histological examination.
