Cytology Laboratory

The Cytology Laboratory of IASO Thessalias is staffed by Cytologists with long experience, and highly-trained lab technicians and administrative staff. It is equipped with the most modern devices and uses cutting-edge technology to perform cytology tests both for the prevention and diagnosis of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases.


The following tests are carried out:  

• Pap Test: Conventional and liquid-based (ThinPrep)
• Vaginal and perianal swabs (anal pap test)
• Nipple discharge
• Urine after an involuntary urination and following catheterization
• Lavage cytology of the ureter
• Fluids (peritoneal, pleural, ascitic, pericardial peritoneal lavage)
• CSF (Cerebrospinal fluid)
• Breast, thyroid, lymph node, salivary gland, soft tissue and skin lesion FNAC

Lung cytology examinations

• Sputum
• Bronchial washing, specimens and bronchial brushing
• EBUS, TBNA
• BAL, bronchoalveolar lavage
  
  

Specimens and FNAb with the help of ERCP, CT, US, EUS for the diagnosis of biliary and pancreatic disorders.  

In our laboratory, cellblocks are made (where the material is appropriate) and immunohistochemistry screening and modern molecular techniques are carried out in collaboration with the pathology laboratory.

Furthermore, a permanent record of tissue slides and cellblocks is also maintained for all incidents, so that patients can access their material in case of need.

Finally, the cytology laboratory is available for consultative tissue slide review.
