Neurosurgery Department Travels to Kalamata
The IASO Children's Hospital Neurosurgery Department is hosting an informational event for healthcare professionals at Elysian Luxury Hotel & Spa in Kalamata on Wednesday 6 November at 17:00.
The event is addressed to doctors from the Prefecture of Messinia, who will be briefed on the activities of the Neurosurgery Department, as well as the targeted, innovative and minimally invasive treatments performed on children.
Neurosurgery Professor Vasileios Zerris, MD, MPH, MSc, FAANS and Director of the Neurosurgery Department, who has long experience in major centers in the USA, will talk about scientific pediatric neurosurgery topics, such as craniosynostosis, cranial and spinal dysraphism, Chiari malformation, neonatal posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus and spasticity.
The IASO Children's Hospital Neurosurgery Department treats all brain and spinal conditions affecting children, from birth to adolescence.
Specifically, it treats:
- Craniosynostosis and craniofacial dysplasias, working with a craniofacial surgeon, trained in the USA
- Hydrocephalus, which is treated with implantation of externally programmable latest generation drainage systems (non-visible externally) or with the innovative endoscopic third ventriculostomy technique
- Brain and spinal tumors (surgical resection or minimally invasive stereotactic biopsy, depending on the indications)
- Encephaloceles or meningoceles
- Traumatic brain injury and traumatic spine and spinal cord injury
- Chiari malformation
- Spinal dysraphism, fixation of last spinal cord filament, myelomeningocele
- Spasticity (often as a result of brain paralysis), which is treated with the innovative selective dorsal rhizotomy surgical technique or with placement (non-visible externally) of pump for intrathecal administration of baclofen, making the daily care of young patients easier
- Syringomyelia
- Scoliosis, even performing highly complex spondylodesis techniques, depending on the indications
- Drug-resistant epilepsy, which is treated with selective resection of the epileptic focus or implantation of vagus nerve stimulator
- Movement disorders, such as dystonia, which are treated by performing superselective pathogenic tissue damage or with implantation of neural function stimulators or inhibitors (deep brain stimulation)
- Brain and spinal abscesses
The IASO Children's Hospital Neurosurgery Department, headed by Neurosurgery Professor Vasileios Zerris, MD, MPH, MSc, FAANS, offers permanent treatment, even for conditions that were deemed incurable until recently or were accompanied by severe neurological deficits.
