Pioneering surgical management of endometrial cancer
IASO successfully applies the promising Sentinel Lymph Node (SLN) detection and mapping technique.
Under the close guidance of the tumor board and based on modern therapeutic techniques and patient safety, the first three procedures for the management of endometrial cancer using the SLN biopsy technique were performed.
It is of particular importance that, according to the international literature, the technique may predict in more than 95% the likelihood of existing metastatic disease, reducing the potential complications associated with radical lymphadenectomy.
This technique, which was up to now performed only in specialized centers aboard, is now conducted by physicians-associates to IASO, who hold international post-graduate training and extensive experience. At the same time, apart from endometrial cancer, the detection of the SLN is quite significant in cervical cancer; the technique may be performed either laparoscopically or during open surgery.
The use of special endoscopes-cameras equipped with filters to detect the fluorescent substance ICG allow for the accurate and safe detection of the SLN. These specialized machines are part of IASO’s OR equipment and they can analyze parts of visible light close to infrared radiation (Near InfraRed / NIR camera) and build upon the management of one of the most common gynecological cancers.
All three cases managed with the new technology introduced by IASO were discharged, and suffered no complications during their recovery period.
