Focal Therapy – A Pioneering Method for the treatment of prostate cancer at IASO General
Focal therapy is a new revolutionary way for prostate cancer management, applied for the first time in Greece by IASO General. This new method is already applied in renowned centers in the USA and Europe, and delivers excellent results.
How the method is applied – Advantages
Focal therapy is a general term encompassing a variety of non invasive techniques used in the destruction of minor tumors inside the prostate gland. It is based on imaging techniques combining prostate MRI and transrectal ultrasound (fusion technique). In particular, images of the prostate and lesion (tumor) are obtained via MRI, which are then integrated into the ultrasound performed at that moment. A sensor provides 3-D guidance and thus we are directly oriented to the suspected site for biopsy specimen.
As soon as histology examination demonstrates the lesion to be cancerous, then, with extreme precision, the tumor is directly destroyed with a needle (bearing a laser fiber optic), percutaneously and without incisions, and prostate healthy cells and tissues are kept intact. The result is that common complications (incontinence, erectile dysfunction, etc) manifesting in prostate cancer surgical treatment do not occur. Usually, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia and the patient is discharged from the Clinic a few hours later.
The scope of focal therapy is to successfully destroy all cancerous sites, minimize side effects on the inside of the prostate gland, keep all the rest areas of the gland unaffected, and protect prostate normal tissue.
Indications
Focal therapy is offered as an alternative treatment option in men with minor (small-sized) localized prostate cancers.
