the first organized Cardiac Valvulopathy Center of Reference
IASO General runs the first organized Cardiac Valvulopathy Center of Reference in Greece, for the most specialized and excellent management of even the most complex valvulopathy cases, mostly emphasizing on mitral-aortic and ascending aorta-aortic arch aneurysms valvuloplasty.
The Center is headed by Ms Maria Aroni, MD, FACS, FACC, FCCP, Cardiac Surgeon, Professor at the University of Cornell, a scientist renowned for the excellent results she delivers in cardiac surgeries performed in the USA, based on data published by the New York Department of Health. The Center is staffed by highly experienced cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists and perfusionists.
The philosophy of the Cardiac Valvulopathy Center of Reference, as in the largest cardiac surgery centers of reference abroad, is that restoration (valvuloplasty) and cardiac valve preservation outweighs its replacement. In this way, many patients, mostly of young age, can benefit the most out of a valve repair compared to its replacement with a prosthetic metallic one, and avoid lifelong intake of anticoagulant therapy.
The Center focuses on the following procedures, applying the most appropriate modern techniques:
- Insufficient mitral valve repair (Valvuloplasty)
- Aortic Valve Valvuloplasty due to valvular insufficiency and Marfan’s syndrome (Aortic Root aneurysm)
- Tricuspid Valvuloplasty
- Valve replacement due to calcification (calcification-valve stenosis)
- Ascending aorta aneurysm replacement, as they commonly co-exist with aortic valve diseases (e.g. bicuspid aortic valve)
- Surgical treatment of Cardiac Tumors (Myxomas) and Intraventricular Communications (“hole in the heart”)
The Center is supported with the required cutting-edge medical equipment and modern infrastructure of IASO General to fully cover all the increasing needs of cardiac surgery patients. In particular, IASO General provides well-equipped operating rooms with intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (ETE) to establish the successful sealing of the valve during the repair procedure, a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, a technologically advanced telemetry system to monitor the patients and deliver 24/7 timely diagnosis and treatment to any arrhythmias occurring, the Cardiology Laboratory, the Department of Medical Imaging and the Hemodynamics Laboratory on a 24-hour basis.
